چکیده

The NASA African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analyses (NAMMA) campaign was conducted primarily to explore the relationship between African Easterly Waves (AEWs) and tropical cyclogenesis in the Atlantic basin, as well as the role of the Saharan Air Layer (SAL) in modulating the intensity of the waves and incipient tropical cyclone growth. This paper presents an overview of TOGA radar observations that were collected in the Republic of Cape Verde (CV) during the NAMMA campaign. Preliminary analyses of convection associated with an AEW observed by TOGA in early September are also presented.

Sheared deep vortical convection in pre‐depression Hagupit during TCS08

[1] Airborne Doppler radar observations from the recent Tropical Cyclone Structure 2008 field campaign in the western North Pacific reveal the presence of deep, buoyant and vortical convective features within a vertically‐sheared, westward‐moving pre‐depression disturbance that later developed into Typhoon Hagupit. On two consecutive days, the observations document tilted, vertically coherent p...

Localized fast flow disturbance observed in the plasma sheet and in the ionosphere

An isolated plasma sheet flow burst took place at 22:02 UT, 1 September 2002, when the Cluster footpoint was located within the area covered by the Magnetometers-Ionospheric Radars-All-sky Cameras Large Experiment (MIRACLE). The event was associated with a clear but weak ionospheric disturbance and took place during a steady southward IMF interval, about 1 h preceding a major substorm onset. Mu...

Evolution of precipitation and convective echo top heights observed by TRMM radar over the Indian Ocean during DYNAMO

Radar data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission show the evolution of echo tops of convective elements over the Indian Ocean and Maritime Continent during the Dynamics of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (DYNAMO) field campaign of 2011–2012. Echo top heights exhibited a bimodal distribution wherein cumulonimbi of moderate height constituted a “congestus mode” while vertically extensive cum...

EISCAT observations of plasma patches at sub-auroral cusp latitudes

A sequence of 3 patches of high-density (1012 m−3) cold plasma on a horizontal scale-size of 300– 700 km was observed near magnetic noon by the EISCAT VHF radar above Svalbard on 17 December 2001. The patches followed a trajectory towards the cusp inflow region. The combination of radar and all-sky observations demonstrates that the patches must have been segmented equatorward of the cusp/cleft...
